power-up your work in progress

These sessions are for poets who want to make real, observable progress in their work, or have a specific aim, such as journal publication, or selecting poems for a pamphlet or chapbook. You will learn how to develop your writing by more confidently inhabiting your unique voice and upgrading specific details of your work.

Where is the energy in the text, and where is it falling flat?

Which parts of the poem are working, and which are not yet pulling their weight?

Is the title doing any work?

Is the opening arresting enough to make your reader sit up and pay attention?

Could the images have more impact?

Is the ending doing more than tailing off?

I am a widely published poet and experienced teacher with a deep knowledge of poetry, from the Renaissance sonnet to contemporary lyric and experiment. I have taught at the Universities of Bristol and Exeter and have critical essays on Emily Dickinson, Stevie Smith, Wanda Coleman, Sylvia Plath, Emily Berry, Hera Lindsay Bird, The Cyborg Jillian Weise and Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. Recent publications include a found-text dream log in Poetry Review and a text-image collage in Perverse Magazine. I have a collection with Carcanet and poems in Poetry, The Guardian, PN Review, BODY and The Paris Review Daily, and my work has been read on the BBC.

Fees

The cost for a 90-minute Zoom session to power-up your work in progress is £75. I will read up to sixteen pages of poetry beforehand, and follow up after our session with further thoughts, suggestions or exercises.

If you would like longer term support, I do three sessions for £200.
